The Social Representation of Mongolian Manhood and the Armed Forces
Keywords:
masculinity, armed forces, civil-military relations, military sociology, social changeAbstract
This article explores how shifting social expectations toward men in contemporary Mongolia are connected to changes in the authority, legitimacy and social position of the Armed Forces. It argues that transformations in public perceptions of masculinity, media representation, and institutional power relations may be reshaping how military service is understood within society. The study suggests that the Armed Forces are increasingly influenced by broader social change rather than operating as an isolated institution. Instead of providing definitive conclusions, the article offers an exploratory framework for understanding the intersection of masculinity, power, and military institutions, and proposes directions for future research on civil-military relations and institutional transformation in Mongolia.
