Distribution characteristics of Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758) Butterfly in Mongolia

Abstract

We have analyzed geographical and topographical information of 143 locations in Mongolia with recorded occurrence and distribution data of Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758). The mean temperature of warmest season and the precipitation in the driest month of the areas with high densities of Old World Swallowtail butterfly population has been shown to share similar characteristics despite vastly diverging natural zones. In Mongolia, Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758) can occur in the areas where the mean temperature of warmest quarter ranges between 13.80C - 15.40C, and have average precipitation in the driest month between 0.74 - 1.68 mm. Besides general climate-related constrictions to range and distribution of Old World Swallowtail, presence of sources of surface water such as permanently flowing rivers and streams, serves as major contributing factor to presence of Old World Swallowtail, especially in arid and desert areas of Mongolia.

Монгол орны махаон дэвүүр (Papilionidae: Papilio machaon linnaeus, 1758) эрвээхэйн тархалтын онцлог

Хураангуй: Монгол орны Махаон дэвүүр (Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758) эрвээхэйн тохиолдоцын тоо болон тархалт тэмдэглэгдсэн 143 газрын байршил зүйн мэдээлэлд боловсруулалт хийв. Махаон дэвүүр эрвээхэй хамгийн их тоогоор тохиолдож байгаа газруудын дулаан улирлын дундаж температур болон хур тунадасны хэмжээ байгалийн аль бүс бүслүүрт оршиж байгаагаас үл хамааран өөр хоорондоо ойролцоо үзүүлэлттэй байна. Уг зүйл эрвээхэй монгол орны хувьд дулаан улирлын дундаж температур 13.80C - 15.40C, хуурай саруудын дундаж хур тунадасны хэмжээ 0.74 – 1.68 мм-ийн хооронд хэлбэлзэх нутаг дэвсгэрийг шүтэн байршиж байна. Махаон дэвүүр эрвээхэйн тархалтыг хязгаарлагч хүчин зүйлд бүс нутгийн цаг уурын нөхцөл байдлаас гадна газрын гадаргын ус, ялангуяа тус орны говь цөлийн бүсэд тархах популяцуудын хувьд тухайн нутагт орших байнгын урсацтай гол, горхи чухал нөлөө үзүүлсэн.
