A Cognitive Study of the color "red" in Mongolian and Korean

Abstract

This study investigates the cognitive linguistic characteristics of the color term red, expressed as ulaan in Mongolian and bulgda in Korean. Drawing on the Mongolian–Korean bilingual dictionary compiled by Dankook University, the research examines the metaphorical and metonymic extensions of red-related expressions in both languages. In this study, first, we confirmed cognitive universality in that "red" holds a high status as a basic color term in both languages, and is strongly associated with primal natural phenomena and life elements such as "blood," "fire," and "sun." Second, emotional associations showed that in both cultures, the color 'red' tended to be associated with intense and polarized emotions such as 'passion', 'love', 'anger', and 'danger'.
This study verifies that while the color 'red' in both Mongolian and Korean shares a universal human cognitive framework, it possesses unique distinctions in lexical usage and cultural interpretation. These distinctions arise due to the influence of different natural environments and Shamanistic/Confucian cultural backgrounds prevalent in the respective societies. These findings make a significant contribution to understanding the impact of language and culture on color perception and cognition.

Монгол, солонгос хэлний ‘улаан’ хэмээх өнгө заасан нэрийн танин мэдэхүйн онцлог

Монгол, солонгос хэлний “улаан”өнгийг танин мэдэхүйн түвшинд харьцуулан үзэхэд зүйрлэл болон төлөөллийн аргаар үүсэх арга зам нь адилхан бөгөөд дэлхий нийтийн нийтлэг хандлагаар “улаан”өнгө нь цус, хувьсгал, тэмцэл зэргийг нэрлэдэг шинжээрээ адил юм. Улаан өнгөөр нэрлэсэн үгийн бусад ялгаатай утга нь хоёр ард түмний шашин шүтлэг, ёс заншил, танин мэдэхүйн арга барилын ялгаанаас үүсэлтэй болох нь харагдаж байна.
